A Soldier's Heart by slshimerdla A Soldier's Heart by slshimerdla
An act of valor in a time of chemical & biological warfare, this soldier risks his own life to save a child.

My husband posed as reference for this one, and it is to him that I dedicate this piece. Love ya, sweetie. :iconshimerdla:

Is your husband a chemical soldier?
slshimerdla Featured By Owner 4 days ago  Professional Digital Artist
He's in the army, but he actually flies helicopters - Chinooks. He just posed for this when I had the idea for it.
TSofian Featured By Owner 4 days ago
I did the chemical thing. Helicopters scare me more than Sarin nerve agent does
slshimerdla Featured By Owner 4 days ago  Professional Digital Artist
I'll avoid both, thanks. :)

I was just a lowly 68N (Avionics), but I remember my time in the gas chamber at Basic very well...and what this soldier is dealing with is no doubt three times worse. It's the bloodshot eyes that sell this one for me.

Terrific work!

being a 74D for the US army (Chemical operations specialist) i can really feel this picture

yo know what is going through the soldiers head as he gives up his mask so that a child may live.

very powerful instant :+fav:

I actually love this piece. Usually, I can't stand anything with American soldiers, not because I disrespect soldiers, but because usually, from what I can tell, ALOT of pro-war Republicans are the ones going on and on about honoring our troops. This makes me want to honor troops though. Not because this soldier's killing a terrorist to protect America, but because he appears to be saving the life of an Iraqi child. Well done on actually making our soldiers look like heroes and not war-mongers! <3 Again, take no offense to my point of views, because I really do like this piece!
odinnson017 Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2009
this is a very powerfull piece as the soldier probably wouldn't survive the gas, quite the sacrifce to make. good luck to you and your husband, may he stay safe where ever he serves.

i love this

"I will never leave a fallen comrade"

this picture alone show what every soldier should be, and needs to be...

lol if the soldier being carried was consious, they should be fighting to put tthe mask on the other battle

Ah the memories of the NBC Chamber... I feel for the guy, as much as that would suck, I'd like to think I'd give up my Pro Mask for the kid. I gotta admit, it would be a tough choice though. I thought I couldn't breath and the camera guy was right there when I got out... LMAO! Snot trail and everything. (I miss BCT.)

I saw a West Point video that showed some footage of that (since my hubby went there, we watch all those documentaries that we can find)... SO glad I was only having to WATCH. Ugh, that does not look fun. :P
LaceyRose Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2008  Hobbyist Writer
It wasn't fun, but at the same time, I'd do it again.

My Drill Sergent got pissed off and was all "IF SOMEONE SHOVES ME AGAIN I'LL KEEP YOU ALL IN HERE LONGER!" It was hilarious!

A truly inspirational work of art! In these days overrun with liberal media, it's wonderful to see a testiment to the true unselfish nature of our armed forces.

Absolutley wonderful job!! I love this. It's so realistic and the detail is unbelievable. It makes me want to cry. Soldiers always seem to care about others and not themselves and this just shows that. I LOVE the idea that he is willing to give up his life for a stranger. He's so brave. I honor your husband and all soldiers. This piece has so much meaning behind it. I LOVE IT!!!!!!

I can understand that. :) If it weren't for all the rest of the crap out there in the world, this piece's meaning would be a lot more evident, I think. I know what you mean, and thanks for the kind words!

Doesn't matter what any anti-war or pro-war person says here. Ignore 'em, most of them on either side have no idea what they're talking about.

The detail on this, and on your CH-47, is amazing. I honestly thought they were pictures. My girlfriend cried when she saw this one.

Anyway, outstanding job, hope to see more from you like this.

Army all the way!

Thanks so much :) It's always great to hear when I've managed to touch someone like this painting did with your girlfriend, too. Tell her I appreciate it :)

She probably thinks I'll get caught in a situation like that. But, she's come to understand soldiers a lot better since she met me. But, all my explanation of how we tick... this sums it up.

My last night here before I ship for Ft. Benning, and right after I posted my journal, the Random Favorites cycled this one onto my user page. Talk about good omens. I've been staring at it for the past couple minutes, and it's really made me feel good about my decision to enlist. Thanks again slshimerdla.
